10. Improving Windows XP boot time

On this page I'll explain how to use one of Microsoft's gadgets, called BOOTVIS, to improve boot time (ie. Startup time) of your Windows XP PC.

I tried it and can only say: Try it! It will most definitely improve boot time!

You can download BOOTVIS either from the Microsoft website or directly from WeetHet (see the Downloads page).

Note: Gerrit pointed out to me that Microsoft published an article concerning issues with BootVis. This will not harm your computer, it only means that BootVis cannot optimize since it is missing the log file it is creating.

Read the disclaimer!

Boot Windows XP faster

Using BOOTVIS, time needed to boot a Windows XP PC will strongly improve. On my own PC, boot time was reduce from 72 seconds, down to 31 second, quite an improvement I would say.

Download and Start BootVis

First download BOOTVIS either from the Microsoft website or directly from WeetHet (see the Downloads page).
After downloading the file from WeetHet, you will need WinRar to unpack the file.

Second step is to start BOOTVIS. Simply double click the BOOTVIS icon (Bootvis.exe).

Analyzing your system

For optimizing the boot sequence of Windows XP, we must have BOOTVIS analyze the boot sequence. In order to do so, a reboot is needed!

Close all running applications. Next we select from the menu "File" - "New" - "Next Boot + Drivers Trace".

You can see here that you are not only limited to optimizing the regular boot sequence, but also the Standby or Hibernate sequence.

After clicking the desired option (I started with "Next Boot + Drivers Trace") a dialog will ask you how many times BOOTVIS should repeat analyzing the boot sequence. More that 2 repetitions does not really make too much sense. Actually, usually 1 repetition will do the job just fine.

Click "OK" to continue.

Now a window will appear, showing a count down. Once this reaches zero, Windows will reboot.

Windows XP will now reboot. When windows restarts, if needed, login as fast as possible as this might give a slightly distorted graph - it does not have any influence on the optimalisation though!

BOOTVIS will automatically restart after Windows complete the boot sequence. Be patient, it will take a few seconds before BOOTVIS appears, showing a graph which indicate the timings. The section (you might need to scroll down) called "Driver Delay" shows you the significant delays caused by drivers being loaded and initialized.

Now select from the menu "Trace" the option "Optimize System":
BOOTVIS will now optimize the initialization of the drivers (some aren't even needed for your hardware setup) and reboot again.

After completing this, a reboot will occur again. After reboot has been complete, it will take a while - could be several minutes - for BOOTVIS to complete the optimalisation.

After this, BOOTVIS is done and your system is optimized.

Tip: after installing new drivers, it might be useful to re-run BOOTVIS.

11. How to disable automatic rebooting on XP

One of the things that is quite different about Windows XP compared to Windows 9x (9x is shorthand for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me in all their various versions), is that one can control how it responds to certain critical errors—those that cause the infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). In Windows XP, the default setting is for the computer to reboot automatically when a fatal error occurs. If that fatal error only occurs when you're shutting down, the system reboots automatically.

If you haven't changed any of the system failure settings, you should be able to see the error by looking in the Event Log. But a better long-term solution is to turn off the automatic reboot so you can actually see the error when it happens—chances are it will tell you enough about itself to let you troubleshoot further. To change the recovery settings to disable automatic rebooting:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2. Click the Advanced tab.

3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.

4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.

5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Now when you go to shut down and a fatal error occurs, you'll at least see it and it won't cause an automatic reboot. You still have to sort out what's causing the problem.

18. How to fix Error “Windows has blocked this software because it cannot verify the publisher”

When you try to access a website which tries to install addons or run executables like installation CAB files.

By default Internet Explorer disable running unsigned ActiveX controls. Unsigned activeX controls are programs that tries to execute a command on your PC, like CAB install files or a ZIP file which do not have a digital signature.

While this is an important security measure on the Internet Explorer browser, if you are sure that the website is a trusted one then you can temporarily disable this security feature to get the website run the required ActiveX and later on re-enable the security.

To disable this feature,

1. Open internet explorer, click Tools – Internet Options.

2. Click the Security tab – Custom Level button.

Under ActiveX ensure the following are set to enabled

Run ActiveX and plug-ins – Enabled

Download Signed ActiveX Control – Enabled

Script ActiveX controls marked as safe for scripting – Enabled

Set the following to “Prompt”

Download unsigned ActiveX Control – Prompt

Initialize and script ActiveX controls not mark as safe – Prompt

3. Click OK and Apply and OK. Restart the browser.

You should now be able to run the ActiveX control on the website. As I said earlier, please ensure that you have the above to what it was before.

If you are thinking of installing an application but aren’t quite sure what it’s going to do to your computer, I would absolutely recommend creating a restore point before you install that application, and here are the steps to do so. Note that most application installs automatically create a restore point, but you can do this if you are really worried.

Open up the Start Menu and right-click on “Computer”, and then select “Properties”.

This will take you into the System area of Control Panel. Click on the “System Protection” link on the left hand side.

Now select the “System Protection” tab to get to the System Restore section.

Click the “Create” button to create a new restore point. You’ll be prompted for a name, and you might want to give it a useful name that you’ll be able to easily identify later.

Click the Create button, and then the system will create the restore point.

When it’s all finished, you’ll get a message saying it’s completed successfully

28. Using Windows 7 or Vista System Restore

Windows 7 and Vista has a feature called System Restore that automatically backs up registry and system files whenever you install new software or drivers. This feature is useful when you install evil software that makes your computer run really slow. But don’t worry, System Restore won’t remove Windows Vista.

Using System Restore in Windows

There are two places that you can use the system restore feature from. From within Windows, you can just type restore into the Start menu search box, and you’ll immediately see System Restore at the top of the start menu:

Or you can type rstrui into the search box and hit enter. Your choice.

You will immediate see a screen where you can choose to roll back the system to the last restore point. You can select “Recommended restore”, and just click next, or you can choose a different restore point.

If you do choose a different restore point, you will see a list of restore points that you can choose from. How many times have I typed the word choose at this point?

You’ll notice in the screenshot below that the last thing I did was install Virtual CloneDrive to mount ISO images, but right before that I installed the NVIDIA drivers.

Click one of them, and you will have to confirm and then restart your computer to roll the system back.

29. How to back up and to restore Outlook Express data

This article describes how to back up and to restore the following items in Microsoft Outlook Express:

  • Messages
  • The Address Book
  • Mail accounts
  • News accounts

If you use multiple identities in Outlook Express, repeat the steps in the "More Information" section for each identity, and separate the backup data accordingly. This process will make it easier to restore each identity.

Outlook Express is an email client from Microsoft that shipped with Windows XP and Windows 2000. For Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, you may want to install Windows Live Mail instead. Refer to this Microsoft Web site for more information:

Trying to download Outlook Express? Try Windows Live Mail instead :

This article is intended for a beginning to intermediate computer user. You may find it easier to follow the steps if you print this article first.

30. How to back up Outlook Express items

Step 1: Copy message files to a backup folder

Step A: Locate the Store folder

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. Click Tools, and then click Options.
  3. On the Maintenance tab, click Store Folder.
  4. In the Store Location dialog box, copy the store location. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Put the mouse pointer at one end of the box under the Your personal message store is located in the following folder box.
    2. Press and hold the left mouse button, and then drag the mouse pointer across the Your personal message store is located in the following folder box.
    3. Press CTRL+C to copy the location.
  5. Click Cancel, and then click Cancel again to close the dialog box.

  1. Step B: Copy the contents of the Store folder
  1. Click Start, click Run, press CTRL+V, and then click OK.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy, and then close the window.

Step C: Create a backup folder

  1. Right-click any empty area on your desktop, click New, and then click Folder.
  2. Type Mail Backup for the folder name, and then press ENTER.

Step D: Paste the contents of the Store folder into the backup folder

  1. Double-click the Mail Backup folder to open it.
  2. Right-click inside the Mail Backup folder window, and then click Paste.
Step 2: Export the Address Book to a .csv file

Important Make sure that you follow this step if you use multiple identities in Outlook Express.

Microsoft Outlook Express 5.x and Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 use a Windows Address Book (.wab) file to store Address Book data. The individual data for each identity is stored in a folder by user name within the .wab file that is used.

The only way to separate the Address Book data for different identities is to export the data to a .csv file while you are logged in as a specific identity. If the .wab file becomes dissociated from the user identities, the data can be exported only as one total. In this case, the data cannot be exported folder by folder.

There is another reason to export the .wab file to a .csv file. If the .wab file not exported to a .csv file, but the .wab file is shared with Microsoft Outlook, the addresses are stored in the personal folders (.pst) file in Outlook. When you export the file to a .csv file by using the File menu in Outlook Express, the correct contacts are exported. However, if the Address Book is shared with Outlook, you cannot use the File menu option to export from the Address Book. This option is unavailable.

To export the Address Book to a .csv file, follow these steps:
